Solar Screen Questions

1. How do solar screens work?

Solar screens are designed to be installed on the outside of you windows or doors; they absorb and reflect the heat before it reaches your window.

2. What is the difference between solar screens and window tint?

Window tint is installed on the inside of the window; heat has already passed through your window.  Solar Screens are installed on the outside of your window, this reduces the amount of heat that actually reaches your glass.  Studies have shown that solar screens offer 2 to 3 times more heat blockage then window tint.  Some window tint will void the warranty of your windows as well, solar screens don’t.

3. How much light do solar screens block?

There are two types of solar screening fabrics, a 80% heat blockage, and a 90% heat blockage, the 90% is the more popular one.  The 80% screening will on average block about 25% of the light coming into your window or door.  The 90% screening will block about 50% of the light coming into your window or door.  Solar Screens also act as privacy screens, during the day you will feel more secure in your home knowing that people outside can’t see strait into your home.

4. Will solar screens block my view?

Solar Screens will NOT block your view.  This is misleading by many window-tinting companies.  You can see out of solar screens just the same as looking through tinted glass.

5. Can you add grid work to my solar screens?

Yes we can add custom grid work to match up with what your windows have.

6. What type of warranty do you offer?

Longhorn Solar Screens offers a 5-year warranty that covers workmanship, manufacturing defects in the screen material, and framing.  It does not include weather damage, vandalism, pets or homeowner negligence.  We will repair or replace any defective workmanship, screen material, or framing to the customers satisfaction.  Screens must remain on the original house installed.

Radiant Barrier Questions

1. What is Radiant Barrier?

Radiant Barriers or reflective barriers work by reducing heat transfer by thermal radiation.  Per the department of Energy (DOE), a product classified as a ?radiant barrier? must have a high reflectance of 90% or more and a low emittance of 10% or less.  If I does not reflect at least 90% of the radiant heat, it can not be called a ?radiant barrier?.

2. Why do I need radiant barrier?

Radiant Barrier will help lower the temperature in your attic in the summer and help keep the heat from escaping in the winter.  By lowering the temperature in your attic you will intern lower the amount of energy needed to cool the inside of your house.  Basically you are putting a large shade tree over your entire house.  Radiant Barrier also helps in the cooler months by not letting the heat in your home to escape to the attic.

3. What is the difference between spray radiant barrier and foil radiant barrier?

Both radiant barrier spray paint and radiant barrier foil reflect or will not emit attic radiant heat.  The best a spray paint radiant barrier will reflect is about 75% of the radiant heat, while the radiant barrier foil will reflect about 97% of the radiant heat.  As you can see there is a big difference in the two products.  One other thing to remember is that the 75% heat blocking rating for the spray radiant barrier depends how it is applied.  The spray paint radiant barrier coating is only as good as the person installing it.  Some contractors will also cut the radiant barrier paint to make it go further, so you will never know the exact heat blockage you will get from the spray.  However, the foil radiant barrier is fool proof, you are counting on the product to do the work not the person.  If the foil is installed somewhere between the roof or rafters and the insulation it will reflect 97% of the radiant heat.

4. How much will I save by installing radiant barrier?

This is the question I get asked most, it is hard to give everyone an exact answer, it depends on the size and layout of your house.  On average you will see approximately a 15-30% savings on your energy costs.

5. How is the radiant barrier foil installed?

Radiant barrier foil can be installed in 2 ways, stapled to the rafters, or layer down on top of the insulation.  The installation method depends on the size and layout of your attic.  Either installation method will produce the same results, you basically want the foil to be between the roof and insulation.
